| １８世紀イギリスの動物画家。ほとんど独学で絵を学んだ。１７４０−５０年代、肖像画家として働くかたわら、解剖学の研究に没頭。ことに５６−５８年馬の解剖に専念、やがて『馬の解剖学』（１７６６）として結実。ヨーロッパ中にその名を知られることになる。 | |
| ６０年以降は、ロンドンに居を定め、「馬の画家」として名声を博した。 | |
| 作品は馬の肖像画、乗馬図、狩猟図など、いわゆるスポーティング・ペインティングが圧倒的に多いが、そこに登場するさまざまな人物の描写から、彼が社会的な階級差というものにも無関心でなかったことがうかがわれる。 | |
