| 江戸に生まれる。１７７５年、Katsukawa Shunsho の弟子となり、版画を学ぶ。１７９６年から１８０２年の間、３万点以上もの挿絵、版画を制作する。日本の伝統的なもの、伝説、日常生活を主題にしたものである。 １８３０年から１８４０年の間、制作された板目木版、シルクスクリーン、風景画は、自由で優雅な線使いが北斎の特徴である。 |

| 北斎は日本でよりも、西洋において大きな影響を残す。彼の作品は、他の画家の版画とともに、１９世紀、パリに輸入された。その作品群は印象派の画家、モネ、ドガ、ロートッレックが多く収集し、彼らの作品にも大きな影響を与えた。 | |
