| ラファエル前派が次第に象徴主義への影響を高めていった時、バーン＝ジョーンズは作品の神秘性を高めながら、装飾性にもこだわっていった。 パーミンガム生まれ。 1853年、オックスフォード大学のエクセター・カレッジで神学を学ぶ。そこでウィリアム・モリスと出会った。 1859-73年の間、4回イタリアへ旅行する。マンテーニャ、ボッティチェリ、ミケランジェロの影響を受けた。 1877年、グロブナー・ギャラリーが新設された。そこに作品を展示してから、人気が出た。 1861年から「モリス＝マーシャル＝フォークナー商会」参加。これはウィリアム・モリス、ロセッティらとともに、装飾工芸品の工房である。バーン＝ジョーンズもそこにステンド・グラスやタピストリーのデザインを提供した。 |
